The terminal building was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and French planners ADP Ingénierie, and executed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD). Hong Kong design studio Lead8 was appointed as lead designer of the commercial landside terminal.

The future plans include 7 runways in total and a second terminal to the south of the current one in order to accommodate 880,000 flights and 100 million passengers per year.
